The Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG Memorial Awards were established in 2015 by Hume City Council to recognise the legacy of Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG, a Hume local and national hero who was killed in action in 2013. He was awarded the country’s highest military award, the Victoria Cross for Australia and was also awarded the Medal for Gallantry for his service in Afghanistan in 2007-08.
Along with his military prowess, Corporal Baird is remembered for his involvement in the community and his desire to inspire the next generation. In particular, he is remembered for:
- His tireless work to raise funds for families of other soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice
- His sportsmanship (football, cricket, track and field and he was an Australian champion at shot put)
- His love of music (always carrying a guitar)
- His desire to inspire the next generation
- His bravery (putting himself in harm’s way for his team)
- His leadership and his commitment to looking after his mates.
A total award of $5,000 is available to young people in Hume to further their personal or professional development and achieve their dreams.
Young people can self-nominate, or be nominated by someone else, to be considered for the Award in either category:
- Leading from the Front Achievement Award – recognising achievements in sport, community, art, employment or education.
- Gaining Ground Encouragement Award – recognising commitment to an area of interest.
